MOGADISHU, SOMALIA

Addressing Radical Thinking and Violent Extremism"

Mr. Ahmeddahir Hussein OSMAN
Advisor on International Relations,
Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs, Federal Republic of Somalia, Ambassador of Peace of EML, Ambassador International parliament for peace and safety, East Africa.
The issues discussed here echo the challenges faced by the Somali authorities. During and after the Somalian civil war, which started in 1991, extremist movements claiming their belonging to Islam have proliferated. The most prominent one is Al-Shabab, linked with Al-Qaida, which remains very active, and who is fighting the Somali government but also foreign ones, such as Kenya. The Somalian government as well as the African Union are cooperating to eradicate the movement, both physically and ideologically. As such, the Somalian government has a long experience in the field of counter-terrorism. It has acquired a relevant knowledge of the tactics and strategies of the movement, for example in the way in which it radicalizes and recruits the youth. Of course, they take profit from the weak economy and target people living in a very precarious socio-economic situations and with mental disorder too. Al-Shabab mobilizes ideologies that clearly misinterpret Islam, and establish a dichotomy between them, who allegedly represent the righteous Islam, and the Somali authorities, depicted as infidels. They push their recruits to kill those working for the government, promising them a reward in heaven. This is why the Somali government is aware that a physical army is not sufficient to fight Al-Shabab and any extremist group. It must win the hearts and minds of the community. This is why it has started to focus on the teaching of the Quran in schools, to counter the ideology and the wrong teaching of the extremists. Actually, Al-Qaida and Al-Shabab have been able to spread their ideology in numerous Quranic schools. In government schools, shari’ah should be adequately explained, and awareness of the variety of interpretative methods and trends should be raised.

Three months ago, Al Shabab released a video accusing the Somalian government, the European Union, and the US of being infidels and enemy of Islam. The Somalian authorities are actually elaborating an adequate reply to this video in a letter. Numerous Islamic scholars are currently working with the Ministries, providing answers to the points raised by Al Shabaab in the video. The Somalian community understands better the misuse of Islam by Al-Shabaab.

However, the mobilization of Muslim scholars against Islamic extremism should be more intense and more structured in international networks of cooperation. Muslim scholars and imams all around the world should unite and highlight the fact that Al-Qaida or other such movements are absolutely not part of Islam. We should not even call them “Islamists”, but find another name or category to name them, to prevent anyone from thinking that they have any religious legitimacy, relevance or connection to Islam. It could be an adequate way to cut the roots of pseudo-religious extremism.

Beyond the fight against such extremist movements, the Somalian authorities should also work further in protecting the rights of religious minorities, and demonstrate more support in their favor. There is indeed a small Christian community in Somalia which is quite vulnerable. We have to insist on the fact that Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)has never encouraged anyone to kill or fight people out of situations of defense in aggression wars. The core concept and meaning of Islam are peace. We must remind that when Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) went to Medina, his rule was based on peaceful coexistence between Muslims, Jews, and the Christians, which is the exact contrary of what is taught and practiced by Al-Shabab and Al-Qaida, which instead call for violent jihad against the alleged infidels. So, we need to go back to our genuine history and restore the knowledge of Islam, and to think about how people could live together peacefully.

Yet another tragedy in the name of a God Clement and Mercy who clearly says it in the Holy Quran: "MY MERCY OVERCOMES MY WRATH." But then why these killings in the name of God? When a Muslim has to pray he has to purify himself by doing ablution. These people who kill have not the slightest notion of religion. We must ban the political and military use of religion. Whoever only mentions the name of Allah should wipe his mouth because he is not worthy to call him back and kill in His name. He does not have the right to call himself a Muslim. We must not judge words but actions, and these are not actions of a Muslim, who eventually has the right to defend himself from aggression but never using religion to get justice as in the free farwest.

On learning of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the European Muslim League has issued the following statement: This is an extremely sad day for the British nation which has, until now, been led for the last 70 years by Queen Elizabeth with grace and distinction. She was, without doubt, the greatest ambassador for the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth countries she represented, a symbol of stability and unity.

EML will be writing to the Royal family expressing the deep sorrow felt by all of our peace ambassadors and officials on learning of the death of Her Majesty.

EML President Alfredo Maiolese said: "Our thoughts are with the Royal family as they grieve for the loss of this remarkable woman who was not only monarch but a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

”Echoing his sentiments, EML Secretary General Yvonne Ridley added: "Her long reign was defined by her strong sense of duty and her determination to dedicate her life to her country. She steered the monarchy through turbulent changes as British influence around the world declined."With King Charles now ascending to the throne, EML wishes the new head of state, King Charles III a long and happy reign.

LONDON, ENGLAND

Let's stop the killings in the name of religion. Religion is an instrument of peace and respect for all, revealed to regulate the relationships between Creator and creatures and between creatures with respect for others in their differences.

EML joins ambitious global peace initiative

The European Muslim League is happy to announce its association with a global peace initiative involving many organisations including leading figures drawn from many religions and none.

The inclusive project stands for Ban the Political Use of Religion International (BPUR) and already has more than 100 key legislative sponsors, officials, diplomats, religious dignitaries, and civil society leaders from around the world on board.

Working alongside them, EML will support the International Treaty to Ban the Political Use of Religion.

Supporters include Lord Rowan Williams, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Professor Malkhaz Songulashvili of Georgia, Sayed Rahim Abu Raghef of Iraq, and Ephraim Isaac, president of the Institute of Semitic Studies.

EML and its own global peace ambassadors have already worked tirelessly to promote the message of peace within Islam and joined many interfaith groups while doing this.

What makes BPUR different is its aim to build a global consensus on setting international rules to ban all political abuses of religion. This can only succeed by enacting an international treaty at the United Nations which will set out clear rules to prohibit all forms of discrimination, religious exclusion, and all political uses of religion that undermine equality and freedom of belief and worship.

The ambitions of BPUR are indeed lofty but EML is happy to be associated with such a non-confrontational initiative designed to aid the international community deal with current and future conflicts.

As our peace ambassadors and envoys are only too well aware, some conflicts in the world today have reached an impasse and this could provide a peaceful outcome.

Legislative sponsors in countries like Morocco, Austria,  Italy,  Bangladesh, United Kingdom, Belgium, Philippines, Spain South Africa, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan,  Spain,  Georgia,  Tunisia among many others are taking the discussion to the government level and, in truth, no responsible government can dismiss this non-confrontational approach easily although we will need to build a global consensus.

A recent conference was held in Morocco and included prominent speakers such as Giulio Terzi, the former foreign minister of Italy; Sir Graham Watson, former leader of the Liberal Democrats in Europe; Amina Bouayach, president of the National Human Rights Council in Morocco; Naguib Sawiris, Egyptian-born chair of BPUR International’s board; and Omar Ghobash, the UAE’s assistant minister of foreign affairs. You might wonder why EML wants to become involved in such an initiative but the truth is despite all international laws in place, religion is still used and abused to invoke conflicts and violate basic human rights.

Crimes carried out in the name of religion must be exposed and brought to a halt and we can only do this with universal consensus.

Meanwhile, rest assured that EML will continue to uphold the values of Islam while working to prevent ruthless political and economic interests from manipulating religious teachings to serve harmful agendas.

We have witnessed too many extremists from all faiths and none who, while committing atrocities around the world do so in the name of their religious beliefs.

This is not an attempt to separate religion and politics! On the contrary, we believe such a separation is not only irrelevant, but also impossible, even in most of the western nations, let alone in other parts of the world. It is only aiming to stop the political abuse of religion and all religious discrimination.

The real purpose is to stop religion from being weaponised by political methods which will lead to discrimination on many levels, especially with minority groups. The main thrust will act as an anchor for moderation, equality, and coexistence. Ultimately this will benefit human equality, and serve to end religious discrimination, all religious exclusion, and all restrictions on freedom of religion and belief.

Some of the most brutal conflicts in the world today have been the result of the toxic mixing of religion and politics. By weaponising religion, extremism has flourished and acted as a recruiting sergeant for terrorists.

Welcoming the initiative, EML President Alfredo Maiolese said; “Nobody is saying we must divide politics from our religions. In Islam, we believe our way of life is transmitted by God the Most High and His influence covers all spheres of life.

“What we hope BPUR will do is expose those dishonest and wicked people who speak in the name of religion to carry out genocide.  Muslims, in particular, have suffered at the hands of these oppressors.

“EML has joined an initiative that will uphold the true values of Islam and not allow it to become weaponised for political abuse. We will not compromise our values and will always maintain respect for minorities and other religions. Our watchwords are justice, love, and freedom.

“Too many impostors have appropriated the Holy Quran and deliberately misinterpreted it to mislead and manipulate those who are easily duped into committing crimes in the name of God. The perpetrators are without scruples, wisdom, and religious knowledge.

“This international initiative will defend Muslims and those of different faiths and none from these monsters who are morally and religiously bereft. This initiative should also see off those European xenophobic parties that promote intolerance through extreme behaviour which has nothing to do with European democratic and liberal values.”

EML Secretary-General Yvonne Ridley said: “This is exciting because once a clear set of international standards to protect human rights from all forms of extremism are established, the benefits will be enormous.

“The hard work will start trying to persuade significant politicians at government level to join this campaign which will ultimately lead to a treaty at the UN General Assembly to embrace this concept and change the world we live in to become a much better place.

“Too long have major faiths preaching tolerance and respect been hijacked and used as an excuse for war, discrimination, and the persecution of minority groups. Setting out a clear set of rules for the international community to follow this initiative could herald a new, more peaceful, kind world for us all to share.”

Dr. Ridley has agreed to become an advisor to BPUR and join its distinguished international panel.

ROME, ITALY

The European Muslim Media Awards,EMMA

The European Muslim League is about to launch one of its most exciting initiatives aimed at promoting the very best of Islam and Muslims around the world today.

We are inviting journalists from all mediums: online, print, broadcast, and podcast to submit three examples of your work that throws a positive, engaging light on Muslim communities and the people who live in them.

The European Muslim Media Awards, or the EMMAs, is open to all publishers and journalists regardless of beliefs when it comes to religion.

The EMMAs are partly created to combat the negative ways in which Muslims are portrayed in the media but they are also designed to recognise good journalism based on facts and not fake news.

Nor will the entries be restricted to journalists of the Muslim faith. What the judges will be looking for is factual, honest reporting on issues in the Muslim community which serve the public interest.

Entries will need to be revealing, exclusive and have a significant but positive impact on the way viewers, listeners and readers perceive Islam.

All entries must have been broadcast or published between August 1st 2021 and August 2022. The closing date for all material will be September 15 2022 and a shortlist will be announced four weeks later on October 15 this year.

The EMMA categories are:

Muslims/Islam in Europe

Muslims/Islam globally

Muslims/Islam in photographs

The judging panel will be led by EML Secretary General Dr Yvonne Ridley, herself a journalist. Details of other panel members will be released shortly.

EML in top talks over Afghan schoolgirls' education

Dr Yvonne Ridley, Secretary-general at EML has held a series of key meetings with government ministers in Afghanistan to discuss the future of education for senior girls.

There has been growing concern in the international community over girls' education in Afghanistan after the Taliban swept into power in Kabul last August.

During her visit to the country, Dr. Ridley travelled to Kabul, Kandahar, Uruzgan, Logar, Ghazni, Nangarhar and other provinces in Afghanistan which have been devastated by continuous wars, occupations, famine, and strife for more than five decades.

"The talks were very productive, especially with the Education Minister Sheikh Maulvi Noorullah Munir. I was assured that the situation will be resolved very soon,” said Dr Ridley.

“What I found very encouraging was that the Taliban recognise girls have equal rights in education with boys. I did express my frustration that the wheels were not turning fast enough in terms of re-opening the girls’ schools.

“The reality is out of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces nearly 20 are ignoring the Taliban’s announcement in March to postpone the opening of schools for senior girls. So, many senior girls are continuing their education and also all senior girls in private, fee-paying schools are also attending lessons.

“However, even if one girl is missing out then that’s one too many and I made my position very clear but it was like knocking on an open door.

“During my visit, the highly respected Ulema in neighbouring Pakistan announced there was no legal justification for banning girls above sixth grade from attending school. This was followed up by a collective of Islamic scholars  in the conservative province of Paktika which also demanded all secondary schools open for girls.”

Dr Ridley said both these powerful moves by clerics echoed the previous month’s "National Dialogue of Afghan Scholars" in Kabul which called on the Islamic Emirate to reopen all girls' schools in the country.

“In light of the guidance of the holy religion of Islam, find a suitable way to solve the crisis in the country, especially to provide education for girls above the sixth grade and to provide employment for women,” said Abdul Sattar Hayat, a member of the Ulema Movement of Afghanistan.

As her visit draws to an end Dr Ridley said she was quietly confident all Afghan schoolgirls would resume their studies maybe even as soon as Eid.

“One senior Taliban official proudly showed me a photograph of his daughter aged seven and declared she wants to become a doctor. He vowed to do everything in his power to make sure she achieves her dreams.”

Dr Ridley said she believes 95 per cent of the Taliban movement wants the issue resolved in favour of the schoolgirls quickly. “There appears to be a bullish, tiny but influential minority that clearly doesn’t want to give the impression they will easily succumb to international pressure but while the obfuscation continues girls are losing out on their education.”

She now intends to submit a report to EML about the state of education in Afghanistan, the lack of qualified teachers and the four million children in the country who’ve never experienced a formal education.

“There are some shocking literacy statistics and it is clear to me that only a large but vocal minority of both boys and girls have benefitted during the US occupation years. However, it is important for us all to start looking forward to finding solutions to the many inescapable problems facing the Afghan nation after 20 years of war,” concluded Dr Ridley.
