Peace as a Moral Responsibility: Reflections from the Abrahamic Traditions

In a time marked by geopolitical tensions and conflicts in different parts of the world, the question of peace has once again become central to the conscience of humanity. Wars do not only represent political or military crises; they also raise deep moral and spiritual questions about the responsibility of individuals, societies and nations.
Across history, the great religious traditions of humanity have emphasized that peace is not simply the absence of war. Rather, it is a condition based on justice, dignity and mutual respect among peoples and cultures.
In the Qur’an, peace is a fundamental concept. The very word “Islam” is connected to the idea of peace and security. The Qur’an reminds humanity:
“God invites to the Home of Peace and guides whom He wills to a straight path.”
(Qur’an 10:25)
This message highlights that peace is not only a political objective but also a spiritual value guiding relations between individuals and societies.
In Jewish tradition, the concept of shalom represents harmony, justice and well-being among communities. The Scriptures encourage believers to actively seek peace:
“Seek peace and pursue it.”
(Psalm 34:14)
Similarly, in the Christian tradition the Gospel calls upon believers to promote reconciliation and peace among people and nations.
These teachings demonstrate that the great Abrahamic traditions share a common principle: peace requires moral responsibility and sincere commitment to dialogue and coexistence.
In today’s interconnected world, dialogue between cultures and religions plays an essential role in preventing misunderstandings and tensions. Civil society organizations and interreligious initiatives can help build bridges of trust among communities.
The European Muslims League (EML) continues to promote dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding between Muslim and non-Muslim communities, contributing to the development of a culture of peace and shared responsibility.
