EML Launches Islamophobia Watch: Monitoring, Verifying and Responding with Facts

The European Muslims League (EML) has launched EML Islamophobia Watch – European Monitoring & Response Unit, a new initiative dedicated to monitoring Islamophobia, disinformation and the manipulation of information concerning Islam and Muslims across media, websites, blogs and social networks.

The digital environment has dramatically accelerated the circulation of information. A misleading headline, an inaccurate quotation or a religious text taken out of context can reach thousands — sometimes millions — of people within hours.

This is why monitoring alone is not enough.

Information must be verified.

EML Islamophobia Watch will identify significant cases and examine the sources behind them.

When the Qur’an is quoted, the original text, translation and context will be checked.

When a hadith — a narration reporting words, actions or teachings attributed to the Prophet Muhammad — is used, its authenticity and context will be examined.

When reference is made to the Sunnah — the Prophetic tradition that constitutes, together with the Qur’an, a fundamental reference in Islam —, the relevant sources will be verified.

Historical claims, statistics and public statements will likewise be compared with available evidence.

Not every criticism is Islamophobia

The purpose of this initiative is not to label every disagreement or criticism concerning Islam as Islamophobia.

Nor is it intended to create lists of enemies or restrict freedom of expression.

If a statement is correct, we will acknowledge it.
If it is false or manipulated, we will show the sources.

The same principle applies internally: EML will continue to oppose those who misuse Islam to justify extremism, terrorism, religious hatred or the rejection of peaceful coexistence.

Credibility requires consistency.

Monitor. Verify. Document. Respond.

The work of EML Islamophobia Watch will be based on four principles:

MONITOR — observe media, websites, blogs and social networks.

VERIFY — examine facts, religious texts, translations, historical context and original sources.

DOCUMENT — preserve evidence and provide transparent references.

RESPOND — answer misinformation through facts, knowledge, culture and dialogue.

The European Muslims League has worked since 2010 in intercultural and interreligious dialogue and conflict prevention. Today, that commitment extends more strongly into the digital sphere.

Islamophobia is not solely a Muslim issue.

When misinformation and generalisations target a religious community, what is at stake is also the quality of public information, social cohesion and our ability to live together without fear of one another.

For this reason, EML Islamophobia Watch welcomes cooperation with institutions, universities, researchers, journalists, religious organisations and civil society — Muslim and non-Muslim alike.

We do not intend to answer propaganda with propaganda.

We will monitor.
We will verify.
We will document.
We will respond.

Not with hatred. With sources.

We counter ideas with ideas.
